idoru
An idoru is a virtual (computer-created) media star. If real pop music stars sometimes seem to become the conception of their producers' dreams, perhaps it would be simpler to start from scratch and design your own media star to perform (think of a fully-developed hologram singing and dancing before tens of thousands of insane fans in Central Park), be interviewed by Rolling Stone, and even evolve and grow older! The idea is explored in the new novel, Idoru, by science-fiction writer William Gibson.
Remarkably, a "real" idoru is being developed in Japan by a multimedia company, Horipro. This particular "virtual idol" or idoru is named Kyoko Date (previously code-named DK96). You can learn more about Kyoko, her aspirations, favorite foods, and plans for the future at her Web site.
Welcome to the house of Kyoko Date!
